The Omega Became My Equal Page 2
He kept his head down and made it to the back of the room as people stared. Mr. Chancellor looked like he wanted to scold him for being late but decided against. I was glad, poor guy needed a break. The class period was mostly spent going over the syllabus, expectations, what we would be taught and things of that nature. I was too happy to hear the bell ring again so I could head home and get ready for training later that afternoon. Since I was the standing alpha I had to oversee the training rather than just participate. I normally would do training with the pack and training with my dad but now instead of going to one session and a private session I would have to attend all of them and sometimes demonstrate techniques to ensure everyone was up to speed.
The other job I had was paperwork and letters to the alpha. I had to keep track of births and deaths to make sure they were up to date. I also had to answer letters from pack members addressing their concerns. Then there were the several bank statements that I had to look at. Even though we had an accountant it was the alphas duty to keep track of finances and make sure all the money was accounted for. It was a lot of work but I was up for it. Most people didn't know that during alpha training you had to attend classes to make sure you could manage everything in addition to the physical training.
I hopped in my car and headed home. I went out to the backyard and made sure everything was set up the way it should be. I had some time to kill so I went up to the office to get some work done. Four thirty came quickly and I headed to my room to change because training started at five. I ran down the stairs and out the back door where everyone was waiting.
"Now that the alpha is here we can start. I want all of you to run laps around the territory. We're working on endurance today. The alpha, beta and I will be checking for improvements on time, speed, and endurance," Mark said.
He was the Gamma and the head of training since he was the strongest next to the alpha and beta. Most of the time Falcon didn't attend since he was usually busy but there hadn't been any recent threats. My dad on the other hand liked to be informed. He felt he needed to know how his pack was progressing so he always attended. He said the main goal of training was spot any weakness and strengthen them. I was following his example.
I grabbed my chart and started running, well jogging since I had to monitor and I couldn't full out run. It was still a good work out since this was only the first group and there were two more to go. I keep a steady pace and was glad to see quite a few of them had improved especially since this was the strongest group. But I was more eager to see how the last group would do since they were the weakest and mostly consisted of the omegas. Everyone knows your pack is only as strong as its weakest member so their session would say a lot.
After one more group, the average group, we finally were at the last one. Mark gave them the run down and we were off. Since this was the smallest group it was easy to keep track of everyone. I checked the chart and noticed a few of them were progressing nicely and could probably move up soon. Chasin was a part of this group and surprisingly he was ahead of the rest of them. He had the potential to keep up with the average class if he worked at. When the session was over I decided to have a talk with him.
"Hey Chasin wait up!" I said running over to him.
He was sweaty and shirtless and even though he was an omega I had to admit he had a nice body.
"Yeah?" he said out of breath from running.
"Sorry I mean yes alpha," he corrected.
"It's okay. Look I've noticed that you're not half bad in a lot of areas and endurance is one of your strong points. I really think if you work on it you could move up and join the average class in a few months. If you're interested I would be glad to help you train. Just think about it okay."
"Sure. Thanks I'll consider it," he said smiling before running off.
CHAPTER 4 Chasin I ran back to the smaller house behind the pack house where the omegas lived. It wasn't run down or shabby, just a place where we could be ourselves without being bothered. Most of us were ridiculed by the other pack members and didn't want to be around them anymore than necessary. I guess you could say it benefited everyone to isolate us, except for those select few like me who wanted to be treated like everyone else.
I always hated living out here. I guess you could say I was the revolutionary of the bunch. I was more outspoken then the rest. I hated living out here apart from everyone like I had some kind of infectious disease because I wasn't as highly ranked or as strong. I hated getting up every morning and having to do things for people who treated me like crap. It wasn't fair and my opinion was known. Too many times I'd been punished for not complying or being out of order because I refused to do something, mostly by average pack members who felt like they were gifts from the moon goddess herself. Naturally nothing much happened around the higher ranked wolves since they didn't allow us to be mistreated, especially Lindsey.
For some reason no matter how hard I tried I couldn't get her off my mind. Every time I closed my eyes I saw her face. I guess you could say I had a crush, since there's no other way I could describe it. I wanted her since the first time I laid eyes on her which was when we were kids. I remembered like it was yesterday.
Flashback
"Chasin I said no running in the house," my mother scolded. I was a bit of a misfit as a child and it was hard for her to keep up with me.
"Chasin I said stop it! " she yelled as I ran faster breaking a vase in the process. "Enough young man. You've done enough. Now go to your room before I tell your father."
I stormed into my room sticking my tongue out at her when I made it around the corner. My room was small and I didn't have much looking back on it. A car bed, a few toys and a TV aside from a dresser, but it was mine and I loved it. I was one of the more fortunate of the omegas. I had both my parents and the nicest things since most of the others had little to nothing.
My parents didn't allow me around the other kids that were living in the pack house because they didn't want me to feel deprived or inferior. What I didn't know couldn't hurt me. They spent most of their time trying to teach me to be a good omega. They told me there were rules to be followed. How I should always obey, do as I'm told without question. That I was destined to serve not lead. I asked them why and they told me that it was the way things were destined to be and that I should embrace it. That didn't sit very well with me for some reason. I didn't fully understand so I decided to play along and do what I was told, just my own way and in my own time.
My dad came home and laughed when my mother told him about my behavior. She gave him a look that clearly meant he was supposed to pretend to be upset but he couldn't seem to pull it off.
"How is he going to learn to follow orders and accept his fate if you encourage his behavior," she said frowning and shaking her head.
"Oh Lily he's just being a boy he'll grow out of it. He just doesn't understand right now."
"I still think you should take his behavior more seriously. If he continues the way he is he'll be defiant and life for him won't be easy," she insisted. "I know you're right but you have to stop worrying, he's only a kid. We'll cross that bridge when we get to it. Want to go out on the playground kiddo?" he said turning to me. I nodded eagerly.
It was rare I got to play on the playground since I wasn't allowed to be around the other kids and they mostly crowded it.
"Are you sure that's a good idea. The alphas could be there with their daughter," she worried.
"Nonsense it's Saturday. They probably took her and the rest of the kids to an amusement park or something. No one is going to be there." "Just be careful," she said kissing us both on the cheek. I ran out the door as fast as my six year old legs could carry me. My dad just chuckled and picked me up so I was on his shoulders.
"You're quite the hand full kiddo. You have to start behaving or you're going to get us both in trouble."
"I will Daddy."
"That's my big guy." He put me down and I started to run towards the slide. The playground was
huge so I didn't notice the little girl hiding underneath. My dad had sat down on the bench to read his paper not noticing her either. He would always check on me every few minutes to make sure I was in place and we would play catch before we left. I always obeyed when we were out here because I wanted to come back so he didn't worry about me getting into trouble. I finally reached the end of the slide and jumped off. I was about to run for the swings when I saw her.
She had her arms cross and she looked like she had been crying. I remembered not liking the thought of her upset.
"Are you okay?" I asked.
"Who are you?" she asked surprised quickly wiping her tears.
"I'm Chasin. Why were you crying?" I said not even asking her name. I just wanted to help her. Make sure she was okay.
"I'm Lindsey. My dad has to go away again. I hate when he leaves and he says I can't go with him." she explained.
"It's okay. You can play with me if you want," I said reaching out my hand to help her up. She smiled and took it.
"Okay," she said happily.
I smiled glad that she had stopped crying. My dad walked over. I guess he noticed I wasn't running around.
"Chasin what are you doing? Oh my." I didn't understand why his expression suddenly changed. "Lindsey? Where are you?" I heard someone call. I had only heard that voice once in my life and that was when the owner came to speak to my parents, the alpha.
"Over here Daddy," she answered.
That's when I realized she was the alphas daughter. The one I had been taught to stay away from.
"Let her hand go son. Come on we shouldn't here," my dad said panicking slightly.
I tried to do as he said but she wouldn't let go. For some reason that made me happy.
"He's my friend," she said looking at my dad.
The alpha came up and I had never seen anyone so tall and large. I knew now why people were afraid of him.
"What is the meaning of this Robert?" he asked my dad.
"I swear I didn't know anyone was out here alpha," my Dad replied bowing his head in submission the way he had shown me.
"Lindsey come on its time to go."
"But Daddy I want to play with my new friend," she whined.
He looked at the both of us. Her holding my hand and me doing nothing to escape her grasp. I wanted to run but at the same time I was hoping to stay.
"Only for a minute Lindsey. I'll be keeping a close watch on you son," he said sternly. I gulped and nodded before she pulled me away giggling.
"Come on Chasin lets go to the sandbox."
From that day forward I never wanted to leave her side. I never wanted her to let go of my hand.
CHAPTER 5 Lindsey
I headed back to the pack house after scouting the territory. I was a little tired but went back up to the office anyway. I was just filing the last of the paper work when I heard a knock at the door.
"Come in," I said wondering who it could be.
"Alpha may I speak with you?"
"Of course Falcon. What's going on?"
"Earlier when I was scouting the territory I picked up a familiar scent." I motioned for him to go on.
"It was Paul, the beta of the Valley Moonstone Pack." My heart almost stopped beating. That was the beta of the enemy pack and the alpha was my ex, the one person I hoped I would never see again as long as I lived.
Flashback
"So where do you want to go for dinner tonight?" Michael asked me. We had been dating for six months and everything was going well.
"How about Vincenzo's?" I asked hopefully. It was this nice but not too fancy restaurant not far outside of his territory. I usually went to visit him when I wasn't training, my dad wasn't too fond of him but he seemed nice enough. Besides we had a lot in common since he was about to become the alpha soon.
"Whatever you want," he said giving me his signature smirk. I squealed happily and hopped in the passenger seat of his car. We got there in record time considering he was a fast driver. I hopped out not waiting for him to open the door for me.
"Excited are we?" he said chuckling. I rolled my eyes at him and pulled him along. This place had great food and I rarely got to come here. We walked inside and immediately were shown to a table. We ordered our food and made light conversation. When the waitress came back with the food and we started to eat he began asking me questions, questions about the pack. I found it strange but tried to brush it off and change the subject. Everything he asked would be giving away a little too much information. I liked him and all but I wasn't stupid enough to tell him anything important. I thank my lucky stars every time I think of what could have happened if I had been.
"Come on babe you can trust me. Besides if we're going to merge one day when I make you mine officially I need to be prepared."
"We'll cross that bridge when we get to it. I don't want to think about alpha stuff tonight I just want to spend time with you," I told him. The truth was I really liked spending time with him. I really did trust him but for some reason I just could bring myself to open up to him. Either way getting involved with him was the biggest mistake I ever made. At the time I wasn't completely opposed to the idea of merging packs. I even thought it could be a good thing, but he taught me well.
He seemed a little pissed that I didn't want to discuss my pack but dropped the subject. After dinner he took me to pick up my car. He asked me to stay but I told him I couldn't. I said goodbye and kissed him on the cheek. Halfway home I stopped at a nearby store to fill up my tank since I never let it get too far under halfway. I went in to pay and my phone rung, it was my dad.
"Hi Daddy what's up?" "Hi Princess. I just wanted you to know we won't be back until after you get out of school tomorrow. There is meeting first thing in the morning and we figured it'd be best if we just stayed overnight."
He and my mother had left early that morning to attend an alpha summit meeting. They were supposed to be back that night.
"I guess I'll see you guys tomorrow then when you get home. Have a safe trip back."
"Okay, bye sweetheart. Love you." "Bye. Love you too." I hung up with a smile on my face. I was going to go back and surprise Michael. This was the perfect opportunity to get some alone time with him. I could spend the night and leave in the morning. Falcon was in charge so once I got settled in I would call and let him know not to worry about me. I pumped the gas and headed back to his place. I hadn't gotten far so it didn't take long to get there especially with me singing along to the songs on the radio. I parked my car and got out. Hannah, the maid, let me in since she knew who I was. I walked up the stairs to his room. I slowly turned the knob hoping to sneak up on him. What I saw I would never forget. Him having sex with another girl. I cleared my throat to get their attention. She was moaning his name but nevertheless he heard me.
"Lindsey," he said getting off the girl.
"Who the hell is she?" the female said outraged.
"Your worst fucking nightmare," I said letting a bit of my alpha tone come through.
"Calm down," Michael said walking toward me.
"Really? You want me to calm down? You bastard. I trusted you," I said slapping him. That seemed to really piss him off. His eyes turned black and his wolf was about to surface but I wasn't the least bit afraid. I was just as strong as he was if not stronger. He couldn't intimidate me.
"You bitch," he spat coldly.
I knew he was mad but he had never called me that before. "You come here unannounced and expect me to be happy. Well let me tell you something. I'm tired of being Mr. Nice Guy. All damn night I had to put up with you and your bullshit and for months I had to pretend I gave a damn about you. I'm sick of it."
I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Where was all this coming from? I thought he liked me. I stood there silent as he continued to speak. "Trust? You want to talk about trust? I've waited all this time for you to tell me what I needed to know so that I could take down your pack like my father and I planned, but what did I find out? Not one single th
ing I could use. Apparently you didn't trust me that fucking much or you would have talked. I just wasted six damn months of my life."
His words cut like a knife. He had been using me the whole time.
"Oh please don't look so surprised. Why the hell do you think I asked you all those questions about your pack in the first place? You didn't actually think I liked you did you?" he said laughing.
I heard the slut giggle. Instead of crying and running out like most girls would do I refused to let him see me that way. There was no way I would give him the satisfaction. Instead I punched him as hard as I could sending him flying a few feet. I heard the girl scream and I was satisfied knowing he hit the wall and was out cold. I walked out of the room, down the stairs and out the door. I hopped in my car and didn't stop until I made it home.
I tried to stop the tears from falling but a few managed to escape. I got out of my car with every intention of heading straight to my room before anyone saw me. Catching him cheating wasn't what bothered me. What bothered me the most was the danger my pack could have been in because of me. I made a vow that night that merging would never be an option for me. That I would never fall victim to another alpha. From that point on I vowed to protect my pack above all else. In the middle of me thinking I forgot to watch where I was going. I ran smack into a chest and almost lost my balance, it was Chasin. Apparently he was on his way home leaving the pack house.
"I'm sorry I wasn't looking," I said trying to wipe my tears hoping he didn't notice.
"What's wrong?" he asked concerned.
"Nothing. It's nothing," I said giving him a weak smile.
"Don't lie to me. You were crying. You never cry. Tell me what happened." Normally my wolf would have been pissed since he was basically ordering me to tell him but for some reason she didn't get upset. He was right, I never cried. Of course he would be concerned, I was his alpha after all. I knew I could trust him. I could tell him anything. I just motioned for him to follow me to my favorite spot in the forest. No one ever went there so I knew we wouldn't be overheard. There were two big rocks and we each sat on one as he waited for me to speak. For a while the only sound was the water from the nearby waterfall, no one spoke and I was glad he wasn't pressuring me. It was one of the things I liked about him, he was patient. He was also a great listener, never judgmental. I took a deep breath and told him everything. Whenever I would say the name Michael his body would tense and his fist clenched.
